Kano Court Sentences 19-Year-Old Woman to Death for Killing Husband Nine Days After Wedding
A Kano High Court has sentenced 19-year-old Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging after finding her guilty of killing her husband, Salisu Idris, nine days after their wedding.
The couple got married on April 27, 2025. According to the prosecution, the incident happened on May 5, 2025, at Farawa Quarters in Kano.
Prosecutors told the court that Jibrin allegedly put a harmful substance in her husband’s drink before attacking him with a knife, leading to his death.
During the trial, the prosecution called two witnesses and argued that the evidence proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Justice Maryam Sabo agreed with the prosecution and convicted Jibrin of culpable homicide. The judge sentenced her to death by hanging and informed her that she has 90 days to appeal the judgment.
Jibrin denied the allegation throughout the trial.
Her lawyer asked the court to show mercy, saying she had changed while in custody and had memorized the Holy Qur’an.
The court, however, ruled that the evidence presented was sufficient to support the conviction and imposed the sentence in accordance with the law.
He also urged the court to consider that the convict was the oldest child of her parents and that her siblings depend on her for their survival.
