Ajax are close to signing Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare from Wolves on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent.

If Ajax decide to buy the Super Eagles forward at the end of the loan, the deal could be worth £17 million, plus additional performance-related payments.

Wolves are also expected to receive a £1 million loan fee. The English club could earn an extra £500,000 in bonuses if Ajax qualify for European competition this season.

Ajax will pay all of Arokodare’s wages while he is on loan in Amsterdam.

The bonus payment would be triggered if Ajax finish in the top three of the Eredivisie or win the Dutch Cup, which would secure qualification for European football. Ajax are currently competing in the UEFA Conference League after earning a place through last season’s Eredivisie European play-offs.

The proposed transfer follows reports that Wolves cancelled a training session after Arokodare allegedly refused to leave the pitch during training. The reports claimed the incident was linked to a failed transfer away from the club.

However, Arokodare later responded on social media, denying the claims and insisting the reports were not true.
