Peter Okoye Apologizes Over Comments About Nigerian Languages, Says His Words Were Misunderstood

Singer Peter Okoye has apologized after facing criticism over comments he made on social media about Nigerian languages.

In a statement posted on his verified X account on Wednesday, Peter said he was sorry if his comments offended anyone. He explained that he never intended to disrespect the Igbo language or any Nigerian culture.

According to the singer, the controversy began after he shared a post about his children speaking French during a family trip to Paris. He said the conversation was misunderstood and later taken out of context.

Peter stressed that he never said he hated the Igbo language. He explained that he referred to Nigerian languages in general and not Igbo specifically, but some people wrongly claimed he was attacking his native language.

Although he insisted his words were misinterpreted, Peter accepted responsibility for how they were received and apologized to those who felt offended.

The singer also accused his twin brother and former P-Square bandmate, Paul Okoye, of using the controversy to damage his reputation. While he did not mention Paul by name in his statement, Peter said someone close to him had repeatedly taken advantage of public criticism against him instead of supporting him.

He claimed this was not the first time such a thing had happened, recalling previous incidents in which he felt he had been publicly criticized and mocked.

Peter ended his statement by saying he would no longer ignore such actions and would respond in the same manner if similar situations arise in the future.
