The Osun State Police Command has released the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Igbalaye Teslim, after he was arrested with five other people over alleged vote-buying ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

His release was confirmed on Thursday by Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council. He thanked the Inspector-General of Police and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for responding to calls from the public to release the SSG.

Olajengbesi also urged the police to free the other people who were arrested during the operation, saying the police should always protect justice and the rule of law.

Teslim and the five others were arrested during a police operation in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. According to the police, officers recovered ₦4.8 million and other election-related materials from a house linked to the SSG.

The arrests come as political tension continues to rise in Osun State ahead of the governorship election. Supporters of Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking another term in office, and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have continued to accuse each other of election-related misconduct.

Police say investigations into the alleged vote-buying are still ongoing.
