2027: Peter Obi Responds to Calls to Run With Atiku Abubakar
Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi has responded to calls for him to give up his presidential ambition and support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election.
The issue has continued to generate discussion among opposition supporters as political parties and politicians begin making plans ahead of the 2027 election.
Obi was asked about the possibility of working with Atiku during an interview on Arise TV.
The interviewer specifically asked him whether he would consider stepping down from the presidential race and accepting the position of Atiku’s running mate if such an opportunity came up.
Peter Obi Explains His Position
Responding to the question, Obi said he and Atiku are both presidential candidates representing different political parties.
He explained that any possible political alliance should not be based on the personal decisions of the two politicians alone.
According to Obi, such an arrangement would have to involve the political parties and the structures supporting both candidates.
He said neither he nor Atiku would simply step aside because both men have institutional support behind their respective political ambitions.
Obi stressed that any alliance would have to come from the collective decisions of the parties involved rather than from a personal agreement between him and Atiku.
Obi Says Alliance Must Involve Political Parties
Obi’s response suggests that he is not currently considering simply abandoning his presidential ambition to become Atiku’s running mate.
Rather, he pointed out that political alliances are broader than individual politicians.
He noted that both he and Atiku have political structures and supporters behind them, meaning that any decision about a possible alliance would need to take those interests into account.
In his words, both candidates have institutional backing, and it would therefore take the collective effort of the political structures involved to reach an agreement.
Calls for Opposition Unity
There have been calls from some opposition supporters for major opposition politicians to work together ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Supporters of such an arrangement believe that bringing opposition figures together could create a stronger challenge to the ruling party.
The idea of a possible alliance involving Atiku and Obi has therefore remained a subject of political discussion.
However, Obi’s latest comments make it clear that he believes any such arrangement must be discussed at the party level and not simply decided by the individuals involved.
2027 Election
The 2027 presidential election is expected to be an important political contest in Nigeria, with political parties and their candidates preparing for the race.
As the election approaches, more discussions about possible alliances, coalitions and agreements between opposition parties are expected.
For now, Obi has not announced that he will step down from his presidential ambition to become Atiku’s running mate.
His position, based on the comments he made during the interview, is that any possible alliance must be a collective decision involving the political parties and their structures.
Political developments are expected to continue as parties prepare for the 2027 election.
