Man Arrested Over Death of Girlfriend in Kaduna
The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Manaseh Bitrus Jatau over the death of his girlfriend, Rebecca Ojonike Jeremiah, aged 35.
The police said the incident is being investigated after the woman’s lifeless body was found along Mai Angwa Street in the Romi area of Kaduna.
According to the police, officers received a report about the discovery on September 5.
The woman was reportedly found with cotton wool stuffed in her nose.
Police Rush Woman to Hospital
Following the discovery, detectives from the Romi Police Outstation quickly went to the scene.
The officers took the woman to St. Gerald Hospital in Kakuri, Kaduna, for medical attention.
However, a doctor at the hospital examined her and confirmed that she was already dead.
Her remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy to help determine the exact cause of death.
Police Trace Her Last Caller
As part of their preliminary investigation, detectives began looking into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
The police said their investigation showed that Jatau was the last person to call Rebecca and ask her to meet him at Ebano Joint in Romi.
Based on this information, detectives began searching for him.
The suspect was eventually traced to his workplace at Tomato Jos Company in the Maraban Jos area of Kaduna, where he was arrested.
Suspect Allegedly Confesses
The police said that during interrogation, Jatau allegedly confessed that he had an argument with Rebecca inside his room.
According to the police account, the disagreement started after the deceased received a phone call from another woman.
The argument reportedly became a physical fight, during which Rebecca died.
The police further said the suspect admitted that he later moved the woman’s body to an open area close to his residence in an alleged attempt to conceal what had happened.
These claims form part of the ongoing police investigation and will be tested through the legal process.
Police Begin Full Investigation
Following the arrest, Jatau remains in police custody while detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Rebecca’s death.
The police are expected to gather more evidence, interview relevant people and obtain the results of the autopsy.
The autopsy is expected to help investigators establish the exact cause of death and provide further information that could assist the case.
Police Confirm Arrest
The Kaduna State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the arrest while speaking to journalists.
He said the suspect remains in police custody and that the investigation is still ongoing.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect will be taken to court after investigators conclude their work and determine the appropriate charges.
Case Remains Under Investigation
The death of Rebecca has raised concerns in the community, while investigators continue to work to establish exactly what happened before her body was discovered.
Although the police have made an arrest and provided details of their preliminary findings, the suspect has not been convicted by a court.
The final outcome of the case will depend on the evidence gathered by the police and the proceedings before the court.
The Kaduna State Police Command is expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
